Celebrating 15 years of
think. make. tinker

Gever Tulley founded Tinkering School in California in 2005 in order to learn how children become competent and to explore the notion that kids can build anything, and through building, learn anything. A self-taught computer scientist with no formal education, Gever’s expertise is really in… thinking. Gever has taught workshops and made presentations to both kids and adults around the world. He has spoken at TED twice, written articles for MAKE:, and authored the book Fifty Dangerous Things (you should let your children do).

Tinkering School is now offering online Tinkering Camps that are accessible to children around the world. We also offer in-person camps when COVID-19 conditions permit. Kids build confidence, explore key STEM concepts, and share just what capable and responsible makers they are.

CATALYST 2.0 – BUILD BIG AT HOME

Come join us this summer for some hands-on tinkering fun as we build with Catalyst Kits, cardboard, and other building supplies! Campers will have a chance to stretch their imagination and learn new skills as we tackle a bunch of exciting, open ended design challenges together.

Each week will have a new theme (it's always a surprise) and so we never know what projects our campers will dream up. Maybe a motorized ice-cream truck? mechanized extender arms? an automatically rotating kaleidoscope?

Before camp, we will send you a kit full of building supplies including among other things, the best-selling Catalyst motors kit, and a Catalyst booster pack with extra electrical components such as LEDs and switches. We’ll also provide sheets of cardboard, tape and other crafting materials to incorporate into our designs and scale up our projects big time!

DIGITAL TINKERING - CODE TO CARDBOARD

Calling all coding curious and creative campers! Join us this summer as we push the boundaries between science, art, technology and engineering!

In this exciting new online camp, Tinkerers will get an introduction to block based coding using BBC micro:bit as they construct and control a variety of weird, whimsical, and wonderful creations. Campers will have an opportunity to combine large-scale cardboard projects with electronics and robotics (LEDs, servo motors etc), as well as other crafting supplies.

Each week will have a new build theme (it's always a surprise) and who knows what projects campers might end up dreaming up and creating – a  robotic dinosaur that roars when it senses light? or a programmable arcade game? The sky's the limit!

Gever Tulley’s TED Talk

Gever Tulley uses engaging photos and footage to demonstrate the valuable lessons kids learn at his Tinkering School. When given tools, materials and guidance, these young imaginations run wild and creative problem-solving takes over to build unique boats, bridges and even a roller coaster!
